Hearing the news that you suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a car accident is a frightening experience for you and your loved ones. The fact is that a TBI can significantly impact a person’s life and the lives of their loved ones.

It’s essential to understand the far-reaching and long-lasting effects of a TBI.

Living with a TBI

Physical changes are typically one of the most immediate impacts of TBI. Depending on the severity of the injury, symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disorder
  • Changes in appetite

Some individuals may also experience sensory problems such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears, or changes in taste and smell. In cases of a severe TBI, the individual may have paralysis or seizures.

TBI often leads to cognitive impairments, affecting the individual’s ability to think, concentrate, and remember. A person may have difficulty with attention and focus, experience memory loss, and have problems with planning, organizing and problem-solving functions. These cognitive changes can significantly impact work performance and the tasks of daily living.

Emotional and behavioral changes are also common after a TBI. An individual may experience the following:

  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Aggression

These changes can make socializing a challenging endeavor.

Some research suggests that TBI can increase the risk of certain neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other forms of dementia.

The physical, cognitive and emotional changes resulting from a TBI can have significant consequences for the individual. Difficulties in engaging in social activities, work, and maintaining relations can lead to isolation and reduced self-esteem.

While a TBI can substantially impact a person’s life, it’s crucial to remember that resources are available. Occupational and physical therapy can help improve physical and cognitive functions, while psychological services can help manage the emotional changes. However, recovery does take time. If you were injured in a car accident, you may be able to receive compensation to provide financial security throughout your recovery.
